WordPress 3.7 introduced automatic upgrades. In presence of this new feature WordPress Automatic gets updated in background, without any user interaction but this will only work if your site supports the automatic update. You can check the compatibility by installing the plugin Background Update Tester and moving to Dashboard –> Update Tester.

TYPES OF UPDATES

This is a very important question that may arise in your mind – Will this feature automatically update my WordPress version including plugins and theme?. So the answer is NO, by default it will not update your themes and plugins. As by default automatic update only get execute when there is new minor or security release get introduces and do not auto upgrade to any major release.

This mean by default automatic update only able to update 3.7 to 3.7.1 or so but not to 3.8 which will be considered as major release.

CONFIGURE AUTOMATIC UPDATES FOR MAJOR WORDPRESS RELEASES AND AUTOMATIC PLUGIN UPGRADES

To enable major WordPress release update you simply have put this line of code in to your site’s wp-config.php

define( 'WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', true );

Now before adding above line of code this is very important to decide whether you want nightly builds or development updates?. If your answer in No, please place below code in functions.php of your site’s theme folder.

add_filter( 'allow_dev_auto_core_updates', '__return_false' );

And to allow automatic plugin upgrade simple place below line of code in code in functions.php of your site’s theme folder.

add_filter( 'auto_update_plugin', '__return_true' );

Further there are so many configuration filters available for you on WordPress official site. I really hope this post helps you in saving your time of manually update.
